Free trees for City of Sydney residents

April 04, 2018

Residents are invited to attend the annual free tree giveaway at Sydney Park on Saturday 7 April to help grow our urban forest.

Residents can choose up to two trees from 24 different varieties to suit their backyard, courtyard or common area including assorted citrus, grevillea, magnolia, banksia, pistachio and jacaranda.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said as well as making our city more beautiful, trees absorb heat, minimising the heat island effect on hot summer days.

“Trees are the lungs of our city, improving air quality, providing cooling shade in summer months and simply making our streets more beautiful,” the Lord Mayor said.

“We need residents to help us achieve our ambitious target to increase tree canopy cover to 23 per cent – a 50 per cent increase on where we were at in 2008.

“Since 2005, we’ve planted more than 12,000 trees in public spaces, bringing the total close to 45,000. We have many more trees to plant and we want to work with our residents to plant them on private land, as well as public space.

“If trees are planted in the right positions, they can provide shade to a home and reduce the need for air-conditioning as well as saving on electricity bills.”

“I encourage residents to get in early and pick up a tree before they run out.”

Staff will be on hand at the giveaway to advise which of the small to medium sized trees would be best suited to the resident’s home. Residents can also enjoy a sausage sizzle in return for a gold coin donation. Free tree giveaway When: 10am until the trees run out, Saturday 7 April
